The friction in the pipe expansion process has a influence on the expansion process of solid expandable pipe and the mechanical properties of the expanded tubing, thereby choosing a suitable lubricant to reduce friction coefficient in the expansion process is very important to the solid expandable technology. By using abrasion simulation testing method, the friction performance was investigated of a common N80 solid expandable pipe material in the expansion process under the conditions of leadbased grease lubrication, molybdenum disulfide lithium grease lubrication and no lubrication. The wear surface morphologies of the samples at different loads were analyzed by using the Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM),and the wear mechanism under different lubrication conditions was discussed. The results show that added greases can reduce the friction coefficient and wear rate of solid expandable pipe materials during the expansion process, and the wear mechanisms is also changed from the original abrasive wear into adhesive wear. Leadbased grease has the best lubricating effect because of even lower friction coefficient, which can greatly improve the wear performance of solid expandable pipe material in the pipe expansion process.
