Aimed at the rapid loss issue of sulfur element in the gear box lubricants of the traction system of high speed EMU.The action of lubricating oil additives on the metal surface was studied through sulfur additive loss testing under extreme pressure and high temperature conditions,and the reason of sulfur additive loss in the lubricating oils was analyzed.The results show that the major components in sulfur extreme pressure agent are polysulfide,majorly as disulphide and trisulfide.With the increasing of pressure,polysulfide will adhere on the friction surface to form sliding layer for reducing the friction coefficient.The sliding layer formed by polysulfide is relatively stable which is hard to be worn.During the using process for lubrication oils,the sulfur in the extreme pressure agent is consumed,a part of it is attached on the surface of gear while another part is discharged after becoming gas.When the temperature is higher than 90 ℃ in gear box,the consumption of sulfur will become faster.
